Character Name: Jasper
Age: 5500+
Species: Gem
Canon: Steven Universe
Canon Point: End of "Earthlings"

Character Info: Jasper's History on the Steven Universe Wiki

Personality: When Jasper first comes on the scene she is the very definition of large and in charge. She has the advantage of technology over the Crystal Gems, as they haven't been in contact with Homeworld for quite some time, and she's sure to use it. It seems as though she finds their showing to be a disappointment and she expects the mission to end soon.

This whole facade is chipped into once Garnet beats her and their ship is destroyed. The idea of losing upsets her so much that she's willing to fuse with Lapis Lazuli. This is a desperate move, as up until then she'd dismissed fusion as a cheap trick for weaker gems and on top of that she could only hope that Lapis would be willing to do it to get back at the others for locking her away, after she herself had also kept the blue gem imprisoned for a short while.

Over her time in the series, her character goes from self-assured to desperate to obsessive. That confidence remains in place, but as the episodes go on it starts to feel more like a facade she's clinging to than anything with actual backing. Some people would say that it's the time she spent fused and trapped by Lapis that basically broke her, but given the revelations in Earthlings that may not be the case. It didn't help, obviously, but when Jasper returns to Lapis to ask to fuse again it's only because she sees it as the most valid method for gaining strength. No one else has fused with her before then.

In the original battle for Earth she had been a soldier under Pink Diamond, who Rose Quartz apparently shattered. Even though Steven isn't his mother, gems have no concept of reproducing the way humans do and she sees him as Rose having taken a different, though unusual, form. It's insult on top of injury. From the very moment she found out that "Rose Quartz" was still on Earth, her whole objective changed. She ignored Peridot's insistence on checking the Cluster in order to bring the rebels back to Homeworld.

It's her loss at the hands of what she believes to be Rose Quartz and a bunch of worthless lackies that starts her on that desperate path. Lapis is just a means to an end. She ultimately sees herself as a failure, having joined Yellow Diamond after the loss of Pink as a way of trying to prove this wasn't the case. (She doesn't ever even refer to Yellow Diamond as "her" diamond the way those under her do.)

By the time she's corrupted, she feels lower than low. It was likely her fusion with a corrupted gem that caused it, but the corruption itself is also a mental affliction, made worse by the depths of her own self pity. Rebecca Sugar confirmed in an interview that the reason she refused to accept help from Steven was because she didn't believe she deserved it. Lapis and Peridot thought there were better things for them out there, but to Jasper, joining Steven would be the ultimate low.

She's strong, and she knows she's strong, but she's also aware that most of her strength comes from pure brute force. She doesn't have the elemental bending skills of someone like Lapis or any of the healing and protective skills of someone like Rose Quartz. In order to be intimidating she has to be bold and confident. This would be especially useful around Era 2 gems that have little to no power and require a lot of artificial enhancements or smaller and weaker gems like Rubies that need to fuse with others like themselves in order to be a force to be reckoned with.

Even though Rose shattered her diamond, she respected her abilities. She has some sense of honor, but the more she was defeated the more she was willing to give up on some of her former values in order to have a better chance at victory. This ultimately only made her defeat that much worse, since she'd given all that up and resorted to recruiting mindless corrupted gems for nothing.

Abilities:
- Despite the change of her body's make-up, Jasper's existence is still attached to her gem and her gem must be destroyed for her to die. Damage taken to her flesh and blood body will heal on its own over time, and anything that would be fatal to a human will cause her to "poof" the way a gem normally would and she'll have to take time to reform.

- As an era 1 gem, Jasper should have the ability to shapeshift, but she doesn't seem to use it aside from a spin-dash attack similar to something Sonic the Hedgehog would use.

- All gems can summon a weapon. Hers manifests as a helmet with a hammer-like front, used more for offense than defense.

- Jasper is really strong. Like she can lift a car over her head sort of strong.

- Gems have the ability to fuse with other gems into a new gem with the merged personality of the ones that formed it. Fused gems are typically larger, with extra limbs and/or eyes. Due to Jasper's new flesh and blood body, she will be able to fuse with other beings.

- Typically gems don't need to do things like eat, sleep, or breathe. Their body also naturally adjusts to the gravity of whatever planet/surface they're on. This means they can walk along the bottom of the ocean but not bounce around on the moon. With Jasper's altered body, she will need to eat, breathe, and sleep in order to not be miserable. She can go without doing any of these things, but it won't be an enjoyable experience. She will also bleed.

CARNIVAL
Soul Colour: Orange.
Ideal Jobs: Mercenary (working rides when not needed in that role).
Relevant Experience: She's been a soldier all her life and this is the closest she can get to having that role again. The only time she wants to perform for an audience is if others are watching her decimate her opponents in the field.
Carnival History: Jasper was brought in a little over two years ago during the Demolition Derby. At first she was determined to leave as soon as her contract ended, but soon became fascinated with the possibilities of what she could learn while with them. Gaining power is especially important to her after her defeat at the hands of the Crystal Gems. Her original contract rid her of her corruption in exchange for her service, which was a fair trade.

She's spent her time performing her tasks as asked and stopping herself from doing anything serious about the presence of other gems with some difficulty. Though she's kept a lot of what she's learned about many of the places they've visited in the back of her mind, sheer stubbornness has kept her from really taking a lot of the cultural aspects to heart.

The issue with the vampires is a sore subject, as Jasper isn't the most stealthy of mercenaries and blames herself for some of what led them back to the camp. She should be able to perform her job without error and she's determined not to let something like that happen again.

Existing Contract: Loss of corruption in exchange for her first year of service.
Details: It was an easy bargain to accept. She's already lived for thousands of years, so one measly year in exchange for being her old self again without having to rely on the Crystal Gems taking pity on her was an easy bargain to make.

Existing Contract: Area of Study in Elemental magic gained for her second year.
Details: Jasper is a large, powerful gem, but she's been easily outshone by Lapis Lazuli, who has the power to form water to her will. She wants similar powers at her disposal and she won't be able to get them anywhere else. This is a big step, as she's always been one to say that a gem should stick to the roles they were created for, but she's deluded herself into believing it will have all been done for the right reasons in the end.

Existing Contract: ????
Details: Jasper renewed her contract recently without giving much reason aside from having more time to learn her new skills.
